Senator Sandy Pappas Applauds Passage of Gun Violence Prevention Legislation

Bill Includes Senator Pappas’s $500,000 for Nonpartisan Violence Prevention Research

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On Monday, May 4, the Minnesota Senate passed a comprehensive package of legislation to keep Minnesota children and families safe from gun violence and invest in proactive interventions to end the epidemic gun violence. Senator Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) was chief author of a provision in the final package that will provide $500,000 to the nonpartisan research institute, the Violence Prevention Project.

“Minnesota families have lived in fear of gun violence long enough,” Senator Pappas said. “I am proud to have helped pass this holistic legislation to address gun violence prevention from every angle. Gun violence is a complex issue that requires comprehensive, multi-faceted solutions; nonpartisan research from the Violence Prevention Project provides the basis for our policy work. The Violence Prevention Project’s research expands our thinking about where gun violence happens and how to prevent it, from suicide prevention and safe storage to intervening in domestic abuse. Their work, and our investment in their work, makes Minnesota a leader in this field.”
